Aims

The course aims to:

  • Provide students with opportunities to interrogate the field of cognitive psychology for learning and investigate its application to problems that arise in learning and teaching in a range of educational contexts and modalities
  • Equip students with in-depth knowledge about theory, research, practice and policy to engage in informed, constructive debate and in professional reflective practice within the field of cognitive psychology and educational practice
  • Provide students with opportunities to construct meaningful analysis of praxis to enable critical engagement with knowledge about theory, research, practice and policy to improve learning and teaching outcomes and experiences, and to improve professional decision making
  • Further develop students’ understanding of learners’ motivation, cognition and metacognition
  • Equip students with skills to apply and disseminate knowledge for educational practice to a range of learning and learner contexts and stakeholder participants.
  • Further develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving and research skills to enable them to engage in critical reflection on and inquiry into theoretical and practical application to problems that arise in learning and teaching
  • Develop skilled professionals who are able to examine their own teaching and develop evidence-based models for practice 

Student progression rules

Students must have achieved a GPA of at least 6 in 13.5 units of study in the area of the dissertation to be able to undertake the dissertation topics.

Note that students who wish to use their masters qualification to satisfy entry into a Flinders University research higher degree are required to have completed at least an 18 unit postgraduate research component.
