Aims

The course provides students with opportunities to:

  • Critically examine recent literature, engage in debate and reflection, and develop
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of traditions of thought and analysis used to discuss and illuminate matters of educational policy and practice in national and global contexts
  • Interrogate theoretical and practical matters in education in such a way as to improve professional decision making
  • Increase literacy, awareness and applications of Educational Research methods and ethical frames of reference
  • Examine socio-cultural, economic, political perspectives and practices associated with the education of children, young people and adults
  • Locate educational practice and priorities within a complex and contested policy landscape
  • Engage with a range of methods for fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural partnerships and working collaboratively
  • Critique procedures for analysis, synthesis and reporting of qualitative and quantitative data

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Critically discuss and evaluate current theory and research in selected areas of educational policy and practice
2.
Apply evidence-based knowledge, skills and capacities to educational practices to illustrate complex stakeholder dispositions, cognitive skills, reflective awareness and creativity
3.
Synthesize knowledge gained from reading, discussion, and writing to generate conceptual frameworks that are used to evaluate educational research, policies and practices
4.
Implement contextually relevant educational innovation through creative and effective curriculum design, pedagogy and leadership
5.
Analyse leadership models and approaches in light of varied contexts for the purposes of informed decision making
6.
Formulate research questions to investigate issues of interest and/or current concern in Education
7.
Design, conduct, and evaluate a small independent research project in the field of Education

Student progression rules

Students must have achieved a GPA of at least 6 in 13.5 units of study in the area of the dissertation to be able to undertake the dissertation topics.

Note that students who wish to use their masters qualification to satisfy entry into a Flinders University research higher degree are required to have completed at least an 18 unit postgraduate research component.
