Aims

This minor aims to:

  • Enhance pre‐service teachers’ confidence and enthusiasm for teaching STEM education in the Primary
    Years of schooling
  • Develop pre‐service teachers’ deep knowledge of, and skills in, designing curriculum particularly
    related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics for the Primary Years
  • Enhance pre‐service teachers’ ability to articulate the evidence behind their practice in STEM
    education and the rationale for their approach
  • Develop pre‐service teachers’ capacity to continue their professional learning in the STEM education

Learning outcomes

On completion students will be able to:
1.
Explain the knowledge and skills that the different STEM disciplines provide relevant to the Primary Years and work across disciplinary boundaries to actively create cross‐curriculum links
2.
Design a sequence of lessons related to the STEM curriculum supported by well‐developed pedagogical reasoning and disciplinary knowledge and skills
3.
Plan strategies to evidence, evaluate and improve the impact of their teaching of STEM curriculum on student learning
4.
Evaluate a wide range of age‐appropriate and relevant education resources, including ICT that engage students in STEM learning
5.
Determine strategies for using ICT safely, responsibly and ethically
6.
Evaluate the development of their STEM education knowledge, understanding and skills and identify goals, strategies and resources to continue their professional learning
