Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Business and Information Systems) (Honours) produces IT professionals ready to manage and innovate in any challenging business IT environment. Graduates of this degree will be well placed to act as the bridge between the business needs of an organisation and the computing professionals required to provide the technical solutions.

The course provides education in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of information technology and enterprise systems management, preparing graduates for roles such as business analyst, ICT project manager or consultant.

The course offers national best practise work experience and job placement, preparing you for the needs of the South Australian, Australian and international technology industry and public service sectors. It also includes research training and a thesis enabling students to progress to a PhD.

Aims

The course has been designed to prepare students to become computing professionals able to:

Design, develop, install, execute and support applications, systems software and hardware products
Understand and manage complex information systems problems within a commercial or government organisation
Solve complex information systems problems through the use of information technology
Design, manage and analyse complex data-rich environments
Work effectively both as an individual and as part of a team
Exhibit a strong, practical understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities
Undertake a substantial research-oriented project

The course provides experience of working in a team environment in industry. It also provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study or for a career in an IT-related field or in other areas where the range of skills and knowledge acquired is needed or desirable.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Design and develop enterprise and customer focussed applications

Deliver creative solutions to a wide variety of information systems problems

Analyse user problems and design appropriate and effective IT-based solutions

Investigate IT solutions, which align with business needs and industry standards, using skills in networking, programming, security, database and web technologies

Understand and analyse human factors and apply ethical and professional practices

Work collaboratively in a team and communicate effectively in a variety of contexts

Plan and execute a research project, applying relevant methodologies and knowledge appropriate to postgraduate research or advanced industrial investigation

Student progression rules

Students achieving a GPA of at least 5 at the end of the third year will be eligible to continue into the fourth year of the course. Students who do not meet the GPA requirement will be able to exit with the Bachelor of Information Technology (Business and Information Systems) on completion of 108 units according to the first three years of study in the degree.
