Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with the learning opportunities they need to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice (2018) and be eligible for registration as a midwife with the NMBA. Graduates will be competent, confident practitioners in all maternity settings able to practise according to the International Definition of a Midwife adopted by the International Confederation of Midwives 2011.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Provide high-quality, safe and effective woman-centred care within different midwifery models, with a focus on the principles of primary health care and continuity of care

Effectively communicate and professionally partner with women, communities and multi-disciplinary teams to promote choice and achieve high-quality maternal and neonatal care

Practice culturally safe midwifery care, with particular focus on promoting the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander women and their communities
6.
Incorporate critical reflection and well-developed clinical reasoning skills and professional judgement in your practice
7.
Rreview, critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge and skills into practice
8.
Provide clinical, professional, legal and ethical midwifery in diverse contexts
9.
Accept responsibility and accountability for career-long learning and continued professional development

Student progression rules

Failure to complete the course full-time within four consecutive years or part-time within six consecutive years, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

The award of a grade of Fail (F) on more than one occasion, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

A student who fails the practice component of any topic will receive a Fail grade for that topic. A student may at any time be precluded or removed from a professional experience placement.
