Aims

The course specialisation aims to:

  • Provide students with a general grounding in second language acquisition theories relevant to TESOL practitioners
  • Support students to begin to develop the essential tools for classroom practice used by TESOL practitioners
  • Introduce students to the diverse linguistic and cultural communities who are learning English as a second/additional language
  • Provide students with the opportunity to connect across geographical, social and cultural boundaries
  • Produce graduates who are able to appreciate the nature of teaching English to speakers of other languages in a range of contexts, locally and globally, and the need to strive to continually improve their knowledge of the field and their teaching practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Relate knowledge of current theories in second language acquisition as they apply to TESOL
2.
Appraise current issues related to second language acquisition, teaching methodologies and approaches and English language learners in TESOL
3.
Implement activities and lessons to facilitate English language learners’ language acquisition
4.
Apply second language teaching methodologies and approaches for use in your own classroom teaching practice in TESOL
5.
Utilise current theories in second language acquisition to evaluate your own and others’ classroom teaching practice in TESOL
6.
Apply your own teaching methodology and approach informed by current theories in second language acquisition as they apply to TESOL
