The Bachelor of Midwifery - Pre-registration requires 3 years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide high-quality midwifery education to ensure students acquire the professional knowledge, skills, and level of professional competence required to demonstrate the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife standards for practice. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Meet the educational requirements for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
2.
Apply the Flinders University graduate qualities to professional practice
3.
Provide high-quality, evidence-based, safe, and effective woman-centred care
4.
Promote and advocate for models of midwifery practice that exemplify the midwifery philosophy of woman-centred care
5.
Apply the principles of primary health care and midwifery continuity of care across all settings and models of care
6.
Effectively communicate and professionally partner with women, communities, and multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality maternity care that optimises maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes
7.
Practice with cultural capability and humility, with particular focus on promoting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and communities
8.
Practise with respect for ‘other ways of knowing and doing’ that exemplify respectful, woman-centred partnerships
9.
Incorporate critical reflection and well-developed clinical reasoning skills and professional judgement in practice
10.
Review, critically analyse, consolidate, and synthesise knowledge and skills for evidence-based midwifery practice
11.
Provide clinical, professional, legal and ethical midwifery care across diverse contexts
12.
Accept responsibility and accountability for career-long learning and continued professional development

Student progression rules

Failure to complete the course full-time within four consecutive years or part-time within six consecutive years, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

A student who fails the practice component of any topic will receive a Fail grade for that topic. A student may at any time be precluded or removed from a professional experience placement.
